PHANTOM POWER INSTRUCTIONS
Connecting a phantom power pack to a lectern is straightforward once you know the signal path. You’re essentially placing the phantom power unit between your microphone and whatever device you’re sending audio to (like a PA system or amplifier).
Here’s how to do it properly:
- Identify your components
- Gooseneck microphone (usually condenser if it needs phantom power)
- Phantom power pack (typically 12V, 24V or 48V)
- XLR cables
- Audio output (mixer, amplifier, or powered speaker)
- Connect the microphone to the phantom power pack
- Plug the XLR cable from your lectern microphone into the INPUT of the phantom power pack
- This is often labelled MIC In.
- Connect the phantom power pack to your sound system
- Use another XLR cable from the OUTPUT of the phantom power pack
- Run this into your PA system, mixer or amplifier
- Power up in the right order
- Make sure everything is turned down or off
- Turn on the phantom power pack
- Then bring up your mixer/amp volume gradually
- Mounting considerations for a lectern
- Mount underneath the lectern using either the equipment shelf or small tray
- Secure with velcro or brackets for a clean install
Important Tips
- Only use phantom power if your mic requires it (most condenser gooseneck mics do)
- Don’t plug/unplug the mic while phantom power is on (can cause loud pops)
Basic connection (with phantom power pack)
Step-by-step:
- Mic → Phantom Power Pack
- Plug you lectern’s XLR microphone cable into the INPUT (Mic In) on the phantom power pack.
- Phantom Power Pack → Sound System
- Run a second XLR cable from the OUTPUT (Line Out) of the phantom pack
- Plug this into your mixer, PA System, or powered speaker
- Power the phantom unit
- Plug in and switch on the phantom power pack (usually 48V)
Signal flow:
Lectern Mic → Phantom Power Pack → Mixer/Amplifier/Speaker
